Special
After reading the story of Junior I remember an experience with racism I experienced as a child. When I was about 4, my mother and I moved into an apartment. Now for 2 weeks we lived in this place that turned out to be infested with bugs like spiders, centipedes, cockroaches, and other critters. Now when we tried to get our money back and leave that place, the landlord refused and stated that it was our "Special food" that caused the infestation. Luckily, my mother wrote down this quote and took the man to court and sued him for the money he took from us. I wonder if this sort of scenario is common for minorities without much money. Any thoughts?

That sucks is my first thought. My second is that it may not be limited to non-whites without much money, at least according to research and from stories I hear.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to hear from anyone else who has some experience with this.
Oh, sucks that the guy did it. Very cool your mom sued and won!
ReplyDeleteI have not experienced racism in this exact form, but I totally know where you're coming from. My mom is full Colombian and has a very thick accent, and for some reason that makes people think that she is inferior in some way or less intellegent and that she can be taken advantage of. Unfortunately racism is all too common almost everywhere you go. I've lived in 5 different states and have dealt with it virtually everywhere other than Florida which has a large hispanic population. But I agree with Melissa, it's awesome that your mom is strong enough of a person to actually take him to court. Good for her!
